The beauty of metal gates

BexSimon Double Leaf GateHaving designed and built metal gates for the last 15 years as an artist blacksmith, I was so excited to make one for our home. Arriving home is such a pleasure; falling into the artistic metal fantasy whilst waiting for the gate to open. Ok so I am talking about my own handmade work but don’t you find it a real pleasure when you pass a really interesting or unusual artistic metal gate? It feels like you have stumbled upon the gate of Narnia (seriously showing the child in me).

A metal gate feels very positive

A gate feels very positive because it leads you through into something new and closes solidly behind you making you feel safe.  They can be fun, like using recycled items, like old farming tools, hub caps and even bottles bringing in lovely bright colours when the sun shines. Metal gates can also be very traditional using solid square bars, scrolls and collars or really organic and flowing reflecting the nature growing around it. There are so many wonderful creative designs and ideas around.

Another wonderful thing I love about metal gates are: you build them flat, flipping them over to work on either side but then once they are fitted they become this stunning 2 Dimensional work of functional art, bring so much joy to that space.  It doesn’t need watering, weeding cutting or slug pelting it just looks wonderful all the year round.

Metal gates are great to design

Metal gates are great to design with my clients. Finding out what is special to them, making it a piece of their personality. Every handmade gate is different. I design them as a picture, taking into account any specifications. I try to create something that has lovely balance and form, keeping it simple but stunning and in some cases even try pushing my boundaries in design.
